Some people start Saturday night with a movie. Sloane Matthews, Jenna Buglioni, Amanda Thiele and Ella Huber started theirs by firing the cannon at a Columbus Blue Jackets game.

The four PWHL players got the honor to celebrate IIHF World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend, the Blue Jackets posted. PWHL San Jose, which signed Matthews in September after she won a national title at Ohio State, cheered from afar: “WE SEE YOU, SLOANE!!”

The weekend runs Oct. 16-18 and is in its 15th year, per the IIHF. Rinks open their doors so girls and women can try hockey, often for the first time, in more than 30 countries. USA Hockey says it had over 100 host sites last year and calls itself the largest nation taking part.

The pros are pitching in elsewhere, too. The Florida Panthers' community arm billed a Girls Hockey Weekend event on Saturday at the Panthers IceDen featuring Olympian and PWHL Las Vegas forward Hayley Scamurra.

What's next: The PWHL's fourth season starts Dec. 5. Today is the last day of the weekend, so if there's a rink near you, lace up.
