The Atlanta Dream were "right there." That's how coach Karl Smesko put it after a 68-64 loss to Golden State in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals. "That's why it hurts a little bit, but it also motivates us," he said, per ESPN.
So what goes on the fix-it list? ESPN's analysts start with Angel Reese. She dominated early, finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds, but didn't score in the second half. Smesko said the Dream slipped into too much one-on-one ball and didn't get her enough touches. Atlanta also shot 4 of 25 from three.
Reese has been the Dream's engine all postseason, averaging 18 points through five playoff games before the Finals. At media day, she sounded built for this. "You have to be a playoff riser," she said. "The greats are built for this."
The math is simple: Atlanta has to win in San Francisco at some point. Game 2 is Monday at 6 p.m. MT, before the series moves to Atlanta.
