Picture this: you tell your boss you want a new job, you stop showing up, and then you might have to walk back into the office next week. That's roughly where the Winnipeg Jets and goalie Connor Hellebuyck are.
Hellebuyck is a superstar. He's a former NHL MVP, a three-time winner of the award for the league's best goalie, and he helped the U.S. men win Olympic gold this year. He asked for a trade and didn't report to training camp. "I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family," he said last month. The Jets suspended him, and he has lost more than $700,000 in salary so far.
Sportsnet reported Saturday that the suspension is expected to end Friday. After that, he could be traded, get paid to stay away, or come back to the team.
Captain Adam Lowry, who has played with Hellebuyck for his entire 12-year career, is ready for any of those. "There are going to have to be conversations," Lowry said. "We're a team, regardless of who's in the room."
What's next: The Jets (4-2-2) visit St. Louis on Tuesday at 6 p.m. MT.
