Some people work for their parents. Don Mattingly, 65, works for his kid.
The Phillies have signed Don Mattingly to a two-year deal to stay on as manager for 2027 and 2028. Here's the fun part: Philadelphia's general manager is Preston Mattingly, his son. (The team's top baseball boss is still president Dave Dombrowski.)
Don started last season as the Phillies' bench coach. He took over as interim manager just 28 games in, after Rob Thomson was fired in April. He went 79-55 from there and got Philly into the playoffs with a win in the final game of the regular season. The Phillies then lost their wild-card series to Atlanta in three games.
If the name sounds familiar, there's a reason. Mattingly was a Yankees legend, the 1985 American League MVP and a team captain. He later managed the Dodgers and Marlins and was NL Manager of the Year in 2020. Last year, he was bench coach for the Blue Jays team that lost to the Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series.
What's next: An offseason of big questions, starting with shortstop Trea Turner's defence.
