The Los Angeles Rams came into the season as Super Bowl favourites, with a roster people call a "superteam." There's just one problem: special teams. That's the part of football with all the kicking, punting and returning, and the Rams have struggled badly there.
How badly? Football nerds use a stat called DVOA to measure how efficient a unit is. The Rams' special teams sit at minus-15.3%, which ESPN's Sarah Barshop says would be the worst ever over a full season.
On Tuesday, the Rams released kicker Harrison Mevis, who had made 5 of 9 field goals. The day before, he'd had a potential winning kick blocked in overtime against Buffalo.
In comes Blake Grupe, signed off the Jets' practice squad. He's had his own bounce-back story: after the Saints cut him last year, he made all 11 of his field goals with the Colts. "Those five weeks in Indy were seriously big for me, big for my career," he said.
"I do feel confident based on what I've seen," coach Sean McVay said.
What's next: The Rams (2-3) host Arizona (1-4) on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. MT on Fox. Good luck, Blake.
