Training camp can feel like a reality show. Everyone's competing for a few spots, and somebody always gets voted off. For the New York Knicks, the final cut went to Bruce Brown.
The reigning NBA champions waived Brown and kept center James Wiseman, ESPN reported Saturday. Both were on non-guaranteed deals fighting for New York's last two roster spots.
Wiseman, 25, earned it. He played in all four preseason games and put up 18 points and 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes against Toronto on Tuesday.
The money mattered too. According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, New York is only $3.2 million below its hard cap at the "second apron," a spending line that comes with strict rules once you cross it. Keeping both players would have been tough.
Wiseman joins Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond at center, after losing big man Mitchell Robinson to Boston in free agency this summer.
Opening night is Tuesday at 5 p.m. MT against LeBron James and the 76ers on NBC. The Knicks' own preview: "we'll be raising a banner." Not a bad first night on the job.
