Quick hockey lesson: a hat trick is when one player scores three goals in a game, and fans celebrate by throwing hats onto the ice. A natural hat trick is even rarer: three goals in a row by the same player, with no one else scoring in between.
The Florida Panthers have now had a natural hat trick in three straight games, which no NHL team had ever done. Brady Tkachuk had the first two, on Tuesday and Thursday. On Saturday, Carter Verhaeghe got one in an 8-3 win over Seattle. Sam Bennett also scored three goals that night, so the Cats had two hat tricks in one game.
"Sometimes, they just come like that," Verhaeghe said. He also told the team's reporter, "We're all just trying to be like Brady out there."
Florida now has four hat tricks this season, all from the last three games. That ties its total from the previous three regular seasons combined. The team's social account summed up the mood: "we're running out of hats 😭."
What's next: The Panthers visit Ottawa, Brady Tkachuk's old team, on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. MT. Bring a spare hat.
