Tyler Shough has a very good reason for that big glove. The New Orleans Saints quarterback has been playing with two broken bones in his left hand, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
He got hurt in the Oct. 5 loss to Atlanta and has taped his ring and pinky fingers together ever since. The Saints haven't publicly confirmed the diagnosis, and one source estimated the injury could last "a couple of months." Shough hasn't missed any playing time, and he won't.
The good news is that it's his non-throwing hand. The awkward news: last week he handed the ball off with the opposite hand from the one he normally uses, and he's expected to keep doing that while wearing a protective glove over a heavily bandaged hand.
It's been a rough stretch. The Saints are 1-4, and Shough threw for a career-low 96 yards last week against Minnesota. He still believes the Saints "are going to have a really good chance to go on a run here."
What's next: New Orleans visits the Giants (3-1-1) today at 1 p.m. ET on Fox, then plays Pittsburgh in Paris next week before a bye.
