Every title run needs someone who does the unglamorous stuff. In Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, that was Kaila Charles.

Gabby Williams rightly got the spotlight for her 26 points in Golden State's 68-64 win over the Atlanta Dream. But Charles came off the bench and played 30 minutes, more than starters Kiah Stokes or Cecilia Zandalasini, and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, per ESPN's box score.

She added seven points and two steals, and the Valkyries outscored Atlanta by 13 points while she was on the floor. Rebounding was a key factor, ESPN's Michael Voepel wrote: Golden State won the boards 41-35, and the team's much-hyped depth "came through."

Charles, 28, is in her sixth WNBA season. She played college ball at Maryland and was a second-round pick, 23rd overall, in 2020.

What's next: Game 2 is Monday at 8 p.m. ET in San Francisco, with the Valkyries up 1-0 in the best-of-seven series. If the Valkyries need rebounds, they know who to call.
