Saturday was a full NHL buffet: 14 games, from a Winnipeg matinee to a late night in the desert. You don't need to have watched any of them. Here are the storylines worth knowing before your hockey friends bring them up.
The Hurricanes cannot stop winning
Carolina beat Winnipeg 3-2 for its seventh win in a row. The winner came from Nikolaj Ehlers, who used to play for the Jets, so that one probably felt nice. He scored on a power play, which is when the other team has a player in the penalty box and you get an extra skater for a couple of minutes.
A few more fun Canes notes. Mark Jankowski has now scored in seven straight games, the NHL's longest active goal streak. Goalie Pyotr Kochetkov is 5-0 in his five starts. In the final 40 seconds, he stopped 18-year-old Jets rookie Viggo Bjorck with a save off his helmet. Whatever works. The team's social account summed it up: "THAT'S SEVEN #CANES WINS IN A ROWWWWWWW."
Jake Oettinger is basically a wall right now
Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger made 19 saves in a 4-0 win at Chicago. That's his third shutout in six games, which leads the NHL. A shutout means the other team doesn't score at all. His goals-against average, the number of goals he allows per game, is now 1.00. For context, that is absurdly good. Even the Stars' account couldn't quite believe it: "Jake Oettinger has 3 shutouts in 6 games this season and no that is not a typo."
Arttu Hyry scored twice, and coach Glen Gulutzan picked up his 200th NHL win. The one worry: forward Roope Hintz left late with a right hand injury. Health first.
A 1-0 overtime thriller in Columbus
If you like low-scoring nail-biters, Blue Jackets vs. Rangers was your game. Neither team scored for 60 minutes. Then, with 1:33 left in overtime, Kent Johnson buried a pass from Zach Werenski to win it 1-0. Goalie Jet Greaves stopped all 29 shots he faced. That assist gave Werenski 22 career overtime points, the most in Blue Jackets history.
Elsewhere around the league
Bo Horvat scored the winner as the Islanders beat Toronto 4-1, the Leafs' third straight loss. Out West, the Boston Bruins won 4-1 in Los Angeles.
